Since 2001, the Surrey Firefighters have been proud sponsors of the “Goodwill Sr. Girls Basketball Classic” held every January in Surrey’s Secondary high schools. Sixteen teams from Surrey participate in the city invitational where many teams have made it a permanent fixture in their tournament calendar. Many firefighters volunteer their time organizing game schedules, sponsorships and providing BBQ sales with all proceeds supporting the tournament.

In promoting ‘Goodwill’, the Surrey Firefighters Foundation offers several bursaries in the sum of $500 each year to those who have outstanding volunteer service in their community. Each candidate (senior) applies in writing, along with references and grade transcripts, and is reviewed by the school board and firefighter representatives. As part of our Youth and Education program, it is the Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society’s goal to deliver the funds from all donors to the deserving student-athletes of Surrey – we are proud to announce that we have awarded $38,700 in total.

A special thanks to our MVP sponsor, Big Kahuna Sport Company for their continued support to our youth and education program. Since year one, Big Kahuna has donated scholarships and merchandise exceeding $10,000.

Girls gunning for Goodwill glory-SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL

Michael Booth, Surrey Now

Published: Friday, January 08, 2010

Surrey high school senior girls basketball teams have hit the floor running with the annual Surrey Firefighters Goodwill Classic.

Now in its ninth year, the tourney got underway on Tuesday at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary and will continue to the end of the week. The finals are slated to start at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lord Tweedsmuir.

“The tournament has been going for nine years now so it’s pretty well established,” said tourney co-director Nancy Innes. “I think all the teams in Surrey look forward to it. It’s a big event for Surrey schools and the players have a lot of fun. It can get pretty competitive because everybody wants to win it.”

They may all want to win it, but the clear favourite once again is the Elgin Park Orcas. Provincial champions in 2008 and semifinalists in the B.C. tourney last spring, the Orcas will be gunning for their fifth consecutive Goodwill crown. Last year they knocked off a team from Australia in the tournament final.

“We’ve won four in a row now and our goal is to make it five,” said Orcas coach Stu Graham. “It’s a good tournament for scholarships for the players and that’s primarily why we entered it but the goal is always to win it. I don’t think we have any extra pressure on us because we are the defending champions. I put pressure on the girls just to keep them motivated to go after this properly because it can be hard to stay sharp mentally when you’ve got a big lead.”

To ease some of the disparity among the participating teams, tournament organizers have once again divided the participating teams into two divisions. The top six teams — including seventh-ranked Elgin Park — will compete in the Axe Division while the remaining entrants will be pooled in the Ladder Division where they will compete for a separate trophy.

“The two divisions are nice because it gives everybody something to play for,” Innes said. “The Ladder Division has 11 teams this year and there should be a lot of close games there. The Axe Division has six teams and Elgin Park is probably the favourite there. They’re probably the strongest team again but hopefully somebody can give them a good run in the final.”

City bragging rights will not be the only things won at this week’s hoops fest. The tournament will also hand out at least seven scholarships to qualified participants. Innes said the selection process gets harder every year.

“We get a lot of applications for the scholarships and we’re giving out seven for sure this year,” she said. “We get a lot more applications every year, which is great, and they most of them are outstanding. There’s lots of community work – which is something we look for – and their grades are unbelievable. Almost all of them are like 3.9 and 4.0. So it gets harder every year to pick the scholarship winners and that’s because they are all really impressive.”
