How to become a Career Fire Fighter

Required Qualifications
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada.
- High School graduation and successful completion of a minimum of one year
post secondary education (30 credits) or completion of two years of an apprenticeship
program.
- Valid B.C. Driver's License, Class 3 with air, and a driving record that
demonstrates responsible and safe driving behavior. More than six points
in the last three years is considered excessive.
- No summary conviction for a criminal offence related to the job of a firefighter.
- 20/30 visual acuity unaided and uncorrected. Color and peripheral
vision safe for the position of a firefighter.
- Normal unaided hearing.
- Completion within twelve months of the date of application, an entry level
firefighter medical examination conducted by MCM Occupational Health Services
(Telephone: 604-878-1103)
- Successful completion of the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC)
Firefighter Training Program or an IFSAC certified NFPA 1001 Level 2 program.
- First Responder Level 3 certification provided by JIBC.
- All requirements must be supported by certificates or documents for candidates
to be considered for the position of career firefighter.

How Do I Apply For A Career Firefighter Position?
Applications for career firefighter positions with the City of Surrey are
accepted only when there are vacancies or new positions are
approved. Applicants must meet all required qualifications to be considered
for Surrey Fire Department career positions.

You will be required to:
- Pass a written exam.
- Pass a medical examination.
- Pass a physical fitness and performance assessment.
- Participate in an interview.
- Successfully complete the Fire Department training program.

Preferred qualifications:
- A Class 3 Driver's License with an air brake endorsement.
- First aid training.
- Building construction or trade background.
- Fire related courses or work history.
- A non-smoker.
